Is your phone aging your face?

You scroll before bed and wonder if the glow is quietly speeding up your wrinkles. The blue-light serum on the shelf certainly wants you to think so.

The evidence does not back that. Screen light is real light, but its intensity is a tiny fraction of what you get from stepping outside.

Visible light from the sun is the real story

High-energy visible light from sunlight can drive pigmentation, and the effect is more stubborn in deeper skin tones. It nudges melanocytes through a sensor called Opsin-3 and the resulting dark patches can hang around for months.

That is why melasma and post-inflammatory dark spots are visible-light problems, not screen problems. Your laptop simply does not put out enough to matter.

Research note

In a randomized study of melasma patients during summer, a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides protected against relapse better than an untinted one with the same UV filters. The difference was the visible-light defense, not the SPF number.

What actually protects you

If you are prone to melasma or dark spots, reach for a tinted mineral sunscreen. The iron oxides and pigmentary titanium dioxide block visible light that ordinary broad-spectrum formulas let straight through.

If you have melasma, the iron oxide in a tinted sunscreen is doing more for you than any blue-light serum on the shelf. Reapply through the day, because the sun keeps coming even when the SPF wears off.

Practical tip

Sitting by a bright window counts as visible-light exposure too. This is the genuinely grey area, so if your pigmentation is stubborn, treat daytime indoor light near windows as worth protecting against.

When to see a doctor

Melasma and persistent dark patches respond best to a dermatologist's plan, which usually pairs tinted visible-light protection with targeted treatments. New or changing pigmented spots should always be checked.
